Monster boyfriend beat mum-of-eight to death with a paving slab while her terrified kids watched in horror

AN EVIL ex-boyfriend beat a mum-of-eight to death with a 7kg paving slab while her terrified kids watched in horror.

Rueben Paul Peeni battered Crystal Lee-Selwyn 13 times in front of her kids in New Zealand, and she was declared brain dead three days later.

Crown Prosecutor Rebecca Mann said: “The violence on this day was chilling in its brutality,” reports the Waikato Times in Hamilton.

Crystal’s cousin, Rhiannon Selwyn, said: “On Saturday 23rd November Crystal Selwyn became a victim of domestic violence and was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

“She fought hard but sadly her injuries were too much, she was declared brain dead.

“The decision was made to lay her to rest.

“On Tuesday 26th her life support was turned off and she took her last breath surrounded by family, friends and a whole lot of love.

“Crystal was a daughter, a niece, a cousin, a friend and most importantly a mother to eight beautiful children. You are so loved cuz.”

In February this year, Peeni, 36 pleaded guilty to murdering Crystal, 38, and he was recently sentenced to a minimum 15-and-a-half years in jail for killing her in front of five of her six children, and three others.

The New Zealand Herald reports that all of the children present during the fatal assault were aged between six and 14.

Peeni had been drinking all day before going to Crystal’s home in Hamilton on November 23.

The Mirror reports that he began arguing loudly with her, and Crystal was so afraid of him that she went outside, at about 6pm, to call the cops.

But, Peeni followed the mum outside, and punched her so hard that she fell to the ground.

The emergency operator could hear the entire assault, where he pinned down the dazed woman – who had become a grandma for the first time – by clutching her long hair, and continued to pummel her.

Crystal screamed for help, as police were called to the scene.

Her terrified kids, and their friends who were visiting at the time, tried in vain to rescue her. A 14-year-old tried to intervene but Peeni pushed the teen away.

Peeni’s own six-year-old son tried to help his mum by pulling his dad’s shirt and biting him to try and stop the attack.

But the raging monster picked up the 7kg paving stone and struck the injured woman’s head 13 times, while taunting and swearing at her.

After telling her to “die”, he then fled to his sister’s home.

Crystal was rushed to Waikato Hospital, but her life support was switched off three days later.

Reuben was arrested and appeared in Hamilton District court.

It will be many years, if ever, the family will come to terms with the grief they are suffering

Justice Graham Lang told him: “It’s difficult to see how any father could subject his young children and their friends to seeing and hearing conduct such as this.”

Speaking about the 90-second attack, Justice Lang added: “The taunts you made to Crystal in the presence of your children added a further element of depravity and callousness to the brutality.

“Furthermore the children were not only present but two of them also tried to stop you.

“The fact that you carried out this attack in the presence of and in the face of opposition of the children takes the callousness and cruelty of your offending to another level.

“It will be many years, if ever, the family will come to terms with the grief they are suffering.”

Peeni had previously served time in the past for hurting Crystal, and there had been over 100 call-outs to police for help.

Crystal’s mum’s impact report was suppressed by the court.

But on an online fundraising site, the murdered woman’s sister-in-law, Stephanie Peeni, said that “Crystal was beaten until unrecognisable.

“Crystal’s family all mourn the loss of our beautiful, kind-hearted, loving mama, sister and daughter.”
