MEGHAN Markle is “a great friend” and is “always positive no matter what”, according to her close friend Serena Williams.
The tennis ace offered an insight in to her friendship with the Duchess of Sussex after she crashed to a rapid defeat in the women’s singles final at Wimbledon today. Her kind remarks come after close friend Meghan Markle took the best seats in the house to cheer on her champion friend during the two-week tournament during her final against Simona Halep. Serena Williams appeared to defend her friend Meghan, who was heavily criticised after her royal protection officers told spectators not to take pictures of her at a previous Wimbledon appearance.
Williams and Meghan have grown close in recent years, with the 23-time grand slam champion attending the duchess’s wedding in May last year.
This is the second time the duchess has watched the American superstar at the tournament in 2019, after making a low-key visit to catch Williams’s second-round match.
Speaking to reporters after the final, Williams heaped praise on her friend Meghan.
She said: “Just having her in general as a friend is great. She’s such a great friend and a great person as well.
“Always positive no matter what. It’s so good to have people like that just to know. She’s such a fan of the sport.
“She, too, was happy for Simona. She saw she played unbelievable. That’s just the kind of person she is.”
Her comments come just hours after she sought to defend Meghan, revealing she never reads bad press about the duchess.
She said: “I didn’t know there was negative media out there.
“Any time I see her name attached to anything, I don’t read it.
“She couldn’t be a better friend to me.
“Low moments, high moments, she’s always there, and that’s all I want to be to her.”
