Meghan Markle Wimbledon selfie-snapper claims he ‘had no idea Duchess was there’

A WIMBLEDON spectator who was accused of invading the Duchess of Sussex’s privacy has claimed he had no idea she was there.

Tennis fanatic Hasan Hasanov, 58, was confronted by Meghan Markle’s security team after he appeared to be taking a photo of her on his phone.

The Duchess was in the VIP seats at Court One when Hasan stood up in the row in front of her and held his phone up.

But the oil and gas safety engineer was baffled when a royal minder asked him to “please give them privacy”.

Hasan, who queued from 5am and paid £25 for his seat at Wimbledon, said he had just been taking a selfie of the court, and didn’t see the Duchess was there.

Instead, the Azerbaijani-born dad and grandad thought the bodyguard was asking him not to photograph the players with their shirts off.

He told The Sun: “I honestly couldn’t really care less about taking a picture of Meghan, Harry or any of the royals — and if I did, I’d ask first.

“I was much more interested in getting a video of Roger Federer in action.”

The bizarre row came as Meghan watched Serena Williams with two friends last week.

A picture of Hasan – from Wallington, south London – went viral after he was snapped being told off by Meghan’s bodyguard.

But he only found out about the spat after his daughter sent him a copy of the picture while he was on holiday in Switzerland.

He went on: “It seemed crazy to me because all I did was take a selfie to send to my wife.

“It was the best seat I’d ever had in 15 years of queuing up for Wimbledon and I wanted to show off because she didn’t get out of bed to join me.”

Hasan, who plays tennis at a club in Purley, near Croydon, has been living in London for 20 years.

It comes after Meghan’s security team asked another fan at Wimbledon to stop taking pictures of the former Suits actress.

Former BBC Sport journalist Sally Jones told Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on ITV’s Good Morning Britain that she had actually been taking pictures of Serena Williams.

But she said a royal protection officer had tapped her on the shoulder, explaining: “Would you kindly not take pictures of the Duchess, she’s here in a private capacity.”

New mum Meghan made the secret Wimbledon appearance last week while wearing a necklace to mark hers and Prince Harry’s son Archie Windsor, born in May.
