Massive traffic jams on the M6 due to a car accident during rush hour.

A CAR CRASH closed a section of the M6 this morning, causing major delays for motorists.

The northbound carriageway has been closed between junction 26 for Wigan, Greater Manchester, and junction 27 for Standish and Appley Bridge, also in Greater Manchester.

Emergency crews are still on the scene of a collision involving a van and a car that occurred around 6.30 a.m.

Since then, traffic has built up to the point where it has reached Junction 24 in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Greater Manchester, a five-mile stretch.

According to Manchester Evening News, the delays are adding 45 minutes to journeys.

Due to onlookers, southbound traffic is also slow around junction 28 for Leyland, Lancashire.

“Emergency services are on the scene, and traffic is still being held on the (hashtag)M6 northbound between J26 and J27 due to a collision,” the National Highways North West tweeted.

“Please be cautious as you approach.”

Although there are detours in place for northbound motorists, local roads are also clogged.

They can get on the A577 eastbound through Wigan and onto the A49 northbound at Junction 26.

They’ll be able to rejoin the M6 at the Standish interchange after that.

The Greater Manchester Police Service has been contacted for more information.
