Man who sparked frantic search for ‘child in stolen car’ charged with wasting police time

A MAN who sparked a frantic search for a child in a stolen car has been charged with wasting police time.

The Met Police launched an urgent investigation after it was claimed a white Audi and a child had disappeared from Beckton Triangle retail park in Newham, East London on Thursday.

Cops later confirmed that the Audi had been found – and that the child was safe and well elsewhere.

Jamal Thomas, 23, was due to appear at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court via video link on Friday afternoon.

He has has been charged with wasting police time and perverting the course of justice.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “Jamal Thomas, 23, has been charged with perverting the course of justice and wasting police time in relation to an incident in which it was reported that a car with a young child had been stolen in #Beckton yesterday.”

They added: “The vehicle was later found and the child concerned was located safe and well elsewhere.”
