MANCHESTER UNITED have not given up on Bruno Fernandes – but they want to sign Harry Maguire first.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate for fresh faces this summer as he looks to guide United back into the top four.
The Red Devils have already snapped up Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with reports suggesting Solskjaer wants at least two more deals secured before the window closes.
Fernandes enjoyed a stunning campaign for Sporting Lisbon last term, scoring 32 goals from midfield.
The 24-year-old has been heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford as United prepare to lose Paul Pogba.
According to Portguese outlet A Bola, Fernandes remains a target.
However, the move has been put on ice until United can bring in Maguire from Leicester.
United have prioritised bringing in a new centre-back after failing to sign one last summer.
Maguire is their No.1 target but Leicester are demanding £90m for the England international.
“It could be the most expensive sale of Sporting.”
Sporting president Frederico Varandas.
And it could end up being an expensive summer for United after Sporting president Frederico Varandas predicted a record fee for Fernandes.
“It could be the most expensive sale of Sporting,” he told Radio Observer earlier this month.
“The most expensive so far was Joao Mario, for €40m (£36m).
“There have been only talks for Bruno Fernandes, for now.”
A Bola claim United will prioritise signing two midfielders as soon as they secure Maguire.
Fernandes is thought to be one, while Newcastle ace Sean Longstaff has also been suggested.
However, it seems United may have been priced out of a move after being quoted £50m.
But they could have extra funds if they sell Romelu Lukaku and Pogba, who have both been linked with exits.
