Man dies after his car plummets 15 metres down hole at Rockdale construction site in Sydney’s south

A man has died after a car crashed through a fence and plummeted 15 metres down an excavation hole at a construction site.

Police are investigating the freak crash between on Princes Highway at the intersection of Bestic Street at Rockdale in Sydney’s south just after 9pm on Thursday night.

The man, 23, was passenger in a car when it collided with a Volvo hatchback.

After initial impact, the car crashed though a fence and plunged down a large hole at the vacant construction site, which is under excavation. 

The man, who’s yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

The 24-year-old female driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to St George Hospital for mandatory testing.

The 25-year-old male driver of the Volvo hatch, was taken to the same hospital for treatment to shock and for mandatory testing.  

Crash Investigation Unit officers spent the night at the scene to conducting inquiries.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The vehicle remained in the construction site hole overnight and is expected to be salvaged on Friday. 

Police appealed for witnesses to the crash to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
