A MAN has died after a member of the public detained him in the street, police have said.
The 25-year-old man was reportedly seen damaging a car windscreen with a hammer in Stoke-on-Trent yesterday.
A local man then carried out a citizen’s arrest on the attacker in the Staffordshire street at around 2.25pm.
But shortly after being detained by the member of the public the man became unresponsive.
Police arrived at the scene before paramedics rushed him to hospital.
The man was pronounced dead at Stoke University Hospital later that afternoon.
An eye-witness told Stoke-on-Trent Live how the man was restrained for around 10 minutes.
He added: “The man was always moving and then he gave a shudder and I think that may have been his last breath.
“The police arrived and a female police officer gave the man CPR. It is awful.”
Three men aged 20, 30 and 49 have since been arrested in connection with the incident and remain in police custody.
Detective Inspector Alan Lyford said: “Police were called to a report of a man with a hammer damaging a vehicle parked on Speedwall Street. He had been detained by members of the public in Wood Street.
“Our officers attended the scene. The detained man became unresponsive and CPR was performed until the ambulance service arrived.
“The 25-year-old man was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead on arrival.
“Formal identification of the man has yet to take place. But his next-of-kin have been informed and they are being supported by specialist officers.
“We are continuing to investigate this serious incident and ask the public to come forward with any information that could assist with our inquiries.”
