The alleged killer of a young woman has been viciously bashed in his jail cell while awaiting trial.
Sydney man Dennis Pietrobon, 51, is charged with the 2018 murder of Nicole Cartwright, 32, before dumping her body at Buffalo Creek Reserve, Hunters Hill.
He was found in his Parklea Correctional Centre cell on June 30 with serious head and neck injuries.
Since the attack Strike Force Raptor detectives have charged Hells Angel John Gavellas with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Gavellas, 22, was refused bail by the Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday and the matter was adjourned until September 8, The Daily Telegraph reported.
Pietrobon was arrested at Parramatta Police Station on May 27 following a gruelling police investigation spanning more than 18 months.
He was charged with the murder of Ms Cartwright before declining to appear before a magistrate by video link.
The case was adjourned for eight weeks so police could prepare the brief of evidence and Pietrobon was formally refused bail.
He was due to appear before the courts again in July.
It’s being alleged Pietrobon killed Ms Cartwright on October 1, 2018, her 32nd birthday, and kept her body for up to two days before dumping it.
Her body was found wrapped in a sheet at Buffalo Creek Reserve in Hunters Hill, on Sydney’s lower north shore, on October 3, 2018.
NSW Police homicide squad commander Danny Doherty said Pietrobon had been at the police station in relation to a separate matter when he was arrested.
‘Police will allege that Nicole and this 51-year-old man had met through dating sites that Nicole was known to be using,’ Det Supt Doherty said.
‘There’s (allegedly) links between this man and Nicole, and to the crime scene.
The matter is still before the courts.
