M4 traffic update: M4 gridlock near Swindon due to a lorry fire – smoke covers the skyline
VEHICLES have come to a halt on the M4 near Swindon as emergency services respond to a lorry that has caught fire. All lanes are reopened at this time.
On Friday afternoon, queues formed on the M4 after a vehicle caught fire, causing traffic havoc.
Between Swindon and Membury Services, near J15 on the M4, an accident occurred.
“M4 traffic is stopped in both directions between J15 Swindon and Membury Services due to a lorry fire,” Highways England posted on Twitter.
“Please proceed with caution in this region, and if you are stuck in traffic, do not exit your vehicle.”
“We are looking to start imposing full closures of the M4 in both directions between J14 and J15 due to the nature of the fire and the contents of the lorry,” they continued.
“Please bear with us if you are stuck in traffic; we will endeavor to get you moving as quickly as possible.”
“All traffic is momentarily held and queueing traffic due to an accident on M4 in both directions between J14 A338 (Hungerford) and J15 A346 Marlborough Road,” the traffic app INRIX tweeted (Swindon East).
“It has been reported that one of the vehicles has taken fire.”
According to one Twitter user, the “non-moving traffic” stretched for kilometers on both sides of the highway.
“Avoid M4 between Reading and Basingstoke!! Miles of non-moving traffic on both sides of the motorway!!” they warned.
People have been spotted getting out of their vehicles on the carriageway, according to Bristol Live.
Other automobiles with their boots open can also be spotted.

The Newbury Fire Service was dispatched to another car fire on the M4 motorway this morning.
“JY04P1 and JY04P2 responded to a car fire on the M4 eastbound between 13 and 12 at 05.30 this morning,” they tweeted.
“Before the major rush hour begins, this should be evident.
“Drive carefully and take advantage of this beautiful day.”
