Liz Truss tells Brussels to back off on post-Brexit customs rules for Northern Ireland.
FOREIGN Secretary Liz Truss has issued a warning to the EU over Northern Ireland’s post-Brexit customs rules.
Following Lord Frost’s resignation, Ms Truss took over negotiations with Brussels and warned that if the EU refused to accept a “pragmatic compromise,” the UK would unilaterally overhaul the rules.
She insisted she was prepared to invoke Article 16, a backstop provision in the Brexit withdrawal agreement.
“I will not sign up to anything that prevents the people of Northern Ireland from benefiting from the same taxation and spending decisions as the rest of the UK,” she said.
“We’re not too impressed,” said Joao Vale de Almeida, the EU’s ambassador to London. Talks will resume on Thursday.
