Liverpool transfer news: Jurgen Klopp did not gamble on Nabil Fekir for ONE key reason

LIVERPOOL pulled out of a deal to sign Lyon star Nabil Fekir because they didn’t want to gamble on his knee issues.

The France international agreed personal terms ahead of a switch to Anfield in June.

But the Reds pulled the plug at the last minute after discovering ongoing injury problems during his medical.

The clubs had agreed a deal worth £52.8m but Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp decided to pursue other options.

Fekir was heavily linked with a switch to Chelsea towards the end of the transfer window, while there were suggestions that Liverpool had reignited their interest.

“They’ve got a manager in Jurgen Klopp who the players have got a lot of faith in.”

Arsenal legend Ian Wright

But according to the Liverpool Echo, the Merseyside outfit had no intention in following up their previous interest.

The report claims Liverpool were concerned about offering Fekir a five-year deal worth £100,000-a-week amid the constant fear of injury.

The 25-year-old is yet to show any signs of breaking down and he was part of the France squad that won this summer’s World Cup.

But as Klopp continues to seek a long-term replacement for Philippe Coutinho, he did not want to add to his summer spending spree with a player that there was worries about.

Liverpool splashed out £175m on fresh faces during the transfer window, adding four new players as they look to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title.

Dynamic midfielders Naby Keita and Fabinho arrived while Klopp fixed his ongoing goalkeeper issue by acquiring Alisson from Roma.

Switzerland’s World Cup star Xherdan Shaqiri also came in for a cut-price £13.5m.

Liverpool are looking to bounce back from last season’s Champions League final heartbreak as Klopp seeks his first trophy in charge.

And Arsenal legend Ian Wright has backed them to go all the way this season.

“The reason why I want to tip Liverpool is that they’re moving in the right direction,” he said.

“They’ve got a manager in Jurgen Klopp who the players have got a lot of faith in and they’ve got fans who will keep this team going.

“And as long as they can keep the squad fit, the signings that they’ve made are excellent.

“Naby Keita, I believe he will be a massive player, same with Fabinho, and Shaqiri will be a great signing too.

“I also think the goalkeeper is a massive signing for them, one which I think will give them the confidence to go forward again and challenge Manchester City.”

Liverpool kick off their Premier League campaign tomorrow as they welcome West Ham to Anfield.
