Libyan east-based parliament condemns deadly car bombing in Benghazi

TRIPOLI, July 11 (Xinhua) — Libya’s east-based parliamen condemned the deadly car bombing that hit a military funeral in the eastern city of Benghazi on Thursday.

“We condemn in the strongest terms the cowardly attack that took place in Al-Hawari cemetery in Benghazi during the funeral of Khalifa Al-Mismari, former commander of the special forces,” the parliament said in a statement.

The statement demanded the authorities concerned start an investigation into the attack to capture sleeping terrorist cells in the city.

The car bombing killed at least four soldiers of the east-based army and injured 32 others.

The bombing came a day after Benghazi Security Directorate announced the bust of a terrorist network that had planned attacks in the city.

The army has been leading a military campaign to take over the capital Tripoli from the UN-backed government since early April.

According to the World Health Organization, the fighting has so far killed more than 1,000 and injured over 5,000 others.

Libya has been suffering escalating violence and political instability ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011.
