Level 0 for Scotland as a new variation erupts – Javid faces a Commons confrontation

On July 19, Scotland will go to Level 0 with some restrictions, according to Nicola Sturgeon. Meanwhile, Sajid Javid, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, has testified in Parliament today, defending the government’s handling of COVID-19 and plans for “Freedom Day.”

Scotland’s lockdown limitations will be reduced to Level 0 on July 19, as scheduled, according to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. However, some laws will stay in place, such as the use of facemasks “for some time to come.” Ms Sturgeon claimed that removing all limitations would put everyone at danger, speaking at a virtual meeting of the Scottish Parliament.

Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, is being questioned as the number of weekly coronavirus deaths in England and Wales reaches its highest level since mid-May, according to the latest numbers.

However, the number of deaths has been oscillating about 100 for the past few weeks, and it is too early to judge whether the most recent increase represents the start of a trend upwards.

England will enter Step 4 of the Government’s road map out of COVID-19 limitations next Monday, July 19, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed during the coronavirus press conference yesterday.

Most remaining restrictions, such as the legal obligation to wear a face mask, social separation, and limits on how many individuals can gather, will be removed.

As the country moves forward, the government has admitted that there will be more instances, hospital admissions, and deaths.

Mr Javid, who took over as Health Secretary after Matt Hancock resigned over social distancing laws, has indicated that bringing the country “out of this pandemic” is his top priority.

Sir Keir Starmer, the head of the opposition, has slammed Boris Johnson’s plan, warning that he is dragging the country into a “summer of turmoil and confusion.”

New numbers show that tens of thousands more cases of the Delta type of coronavirus have been reported in the UK in the previous week.

In the recent week, 54,268 new cases were reported across the UK, bringing the total to 216,249 – a 34 percent increase.

According to PHE, the Delta variant accounts for about 99 percent of cases sequenced in the UK.
