SERENA WILLIAMS must get fitter if she is to win another Grand Slam after she suffered Wimbledon heartbreak against Simona Halep.
That’s the view of John McEnroe who saw Williams struggle as she was beaten 6-2 6-2 by Halep.
It was Halep’s first ever Wimbledon title with the Romanian dominating at the start.
Williams struggled throughout and appeared to be affected by the long points and defensive ability of Halep.
That’s despite the 37-year-old chasing a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title.
And McEnroe believes Williams needs to improve her fitness if she is ever going to win another Slam.
“Serena Williams has to get herself even fitter because at that level she can be exposed – especially if nerves come in to play,” McEnroe said.
“Halep moves better than anyone on the tour.
“Why she thought she couldn’t play well on grass I don’t know. Maybe it took her a while to figure out.
“Today was the best match she’s ever played and she’s just beaten Serena Williams in 55 minutes.”
Williams admitted she was beaten by the better player on Centre Court.
However is staying positive as she aims to earn another major win.
“I have to figure out a way to win a final,” Williams said.
“Maybe playing other finals outside of Grand Slams would be helpful to get me in the groove.
“I don’t feel there was too much tension. I was overhitting it and trying to go for too much because she was getting a tremendous amount of balls back.
“Not being injured at this tournament was a real positive for me.
“I just have to keep going and keep trying, and just keep moving forward.
“Any loss for me is not easy. But when someone plays lights out tennis, there’s not much you can do.
“You just have to understand that was their day today.
“Hopefully I can raise the level of my game some time.”
