A new craft brewery is coming to downtown Chandler — but it’s not your average neighborhood brewhouse.
Flix Brewhouse, which bills itself as the world’s only cinema-microbrewery, is slated to open in December. It will be seventh U.S. location for the Texas-based chain and the first in Arizona.
The nine-screen movie theater will feature dine-in service, an in-house brewery, a gastropub and a patio.
The cinema brewpub will anchor Overstreet Chandler, a new 77,000-square-foot retail, dining and entertainment complex on the southwest corner of Arizona Avenue and Chandler Boulevard.
‘Cool, modern, hip’
Upscale dine-in movie theaters have been trending in Phoenix, but Flix Brewhouse is unique, says marketing director Greg Johnson.
The venue’s layout is patterned after the look and feel of a neighborhood brewpub.
“If you were to take away the box office, you would feel like you’re in a really cool, modern, hip brewery and tap room,” Johnson told The Republic.
Craft beer aficionados can enjoy the kind of immersive experience they would get from visiting a working microbrewery.
“You can see the whole brewing process right when you walk in from the lobby. The brewing tanks are behind glass above the bar,” Johnson said. “There’s a catwalk above you where the brewers walk back and forth. They’re actually brewing and making beer all around you.”
Over 20 craft brews
Flix Brewhouse will have more than 20 craft beers on tap, including the chain’s six flagship brews:
In addition, head brewer Marisa Bernal, formerly of Flix Brewhouse Albuquerque, will create about a half-dozen beers exclusively for the Chandler location.
“She’s been well known for making amazing, really crushable, easy-to-drink beers that have a lot of mass appeal,” Johnson said.
The bar also will have two dozen guest taps pouring local and regional craft beers.
Pub grub and pizza
To complement the beer menu, Flix Brewhouse serves classic pub grub like Bavarian pretzels, fried pickles and fish and chips. Burgers, salads, sandwiches, wraps and desserts round out the menu.
Pizza is a house specialty, Johnson said.
“Our executive chef Gary Beauregard was the first executive chef at California Pizza Kitchen, so he brought an incredible knowledge base,” he said. “We make it all from scratch. We cultivate our own dough and yeast. it’s really fresh, amazing pizza.”
Every month, the kitchen will offer a different specialty pizza creation.
Like other dine-in movie theaters, Flix Brewhouse offers food and drink service to your seat.
Every seat is equipped with “Easy Glider” movable table tops with built-in call buttons to place your order.
Theater staff — nicknamed “service ninjas” — are trained to dispatch food and drink without disrupting the moviegoing experience.
“During the show, we are a no-talk, no-text environment,” Johnson said. “If you want to order something, once the lights have gone down, you simply push the button at your seat and you write down on a pad what you want,.
“You kind of never see the server coming until they’re dropping you’re food off.”
