Inter Miami sign World Cup winner Matuidi

Expansion Inter Miami CF announced Thursday the signing of Juventus FC and France international midfielder Blaise Matuidi on a free transfer.

Matuidi has played the past three seasons at Juventus in the Italian Serie A. The club has won the last eight league titles.

Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham and Matuidi played with each other in 2017 at Paris Saint-Germain. The 33-year-old Matuidi also helped France to the World Cup title in 2018.

“I couldn’t be happier to welcome my friend Blaise to Inter Miami. He is an exciting and gifted player and a great person,” Beckham said in a statement. “To have a World Cup winner of Blaise’s quality in our new team is such a proud moment – for us as owners and for our fans. For me personally, to have a former teammate joining our Club is very special and I can’t wait to welcome him and his beautiful family to South Florida.”

Matuidi took to Twitter to voice his excitement about the move.

“I made my decision a few weeks ago to join @intermiamicf, rise to my friend David Beckham’s challenge and win new trophies there. My family and I can’t wait,” he wrote.

Matuidi has just two assists and no goals in 35 regular-season games (23 starts) this season, and has six goals and five assists in his three seasons at Juventus combined.

In seven seasons at Paris Saint-Germain, he scored 23 regular-season goals with 14 assists. Over a 15-year career with four separate clubs he has 36 goals and 25 assists in 498 games played.
