    In Belgium, a “special needs school” bus is struck by a train, leaving four people dead, including two children

    A bus carrying pupils from a special education needs school was struck by a train in Belgium on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of at least four persons, including two children.

    I was devastated to hear of the terrible incident in Buggenhout where a train struck a school bus. My sympathies are with the victims and their families. Bernard Quintin, the nation’s interior minister, posted on X, “I wish the injured much strength.”

    The collision occurred at a level crossing in the northern Flanders region, according to a representative for the rail network operator Infrabel who told AFP that the toll was “dramatic” and that “the impact was extremely violent.”

    “A train that was scheduled to stop at the next station, which was about a kilometer away, struck a minibus at around 8.08 am,” he said.

    The Belgian police declined to confirm the number of casualties from the event when questioned by AFP.

    According to Belgian media, there were nine passengers on the minibus at the time of the collision, including a driver, an attendant, and seven youngsters, the majority of whom were in secondary school.

    Emergency personnel are seen working near to the minibus, which lies on its side, in photos taken at the scene.
