If the UK fails to end Brexit deal talks now, the EU will continue to laugh at us.
Lord Moylan, a Conservative peer, has warned that unless Brexit trade talks are concluded soon, the European Union will “keep laughing” at the UK.
During a discussion with Julia Hartley-Brewer on TalkRADIO, the Brexit supporter called for the UK government to invoke Article 16 and withdraw from talks with the European Union. He claimed the current Brexit deal was not working and described the Northern Ireland protocol as a matter of “democracy and the integrity of the United Kingdom.”
“Well, I think the first thing to say is that yes, if it’s not working, you can renegotiate it,” Lord Moylan told TalkRADIO.
“Even if it’s only been in place for a short period of time, if it’s already obvious, it’s not working.”
“Of course, you have the right to renegotiate it, and reasonable adults would do so.”
“The second point to make is that this isn’t primarily about trade; it is, in my opinion, primarily about democracy and the United Kingdom’s integrity.”
“Even if we took a small hit in trade as a result of the punitive measures that the European Union keeps threatening against us, and they can do it again this morning for invoking Article 16, I think we would have to live with it,” Lord Moylan continued.
“As with the other trade impacts that Brexit promised, there will be some short-term disruption as people adjust their trading patterns, but they’ve turned out to be much smaller than people expected, and I expect that to continue.”
“The key question is: are you going to have a part of the United Kingdom subjected to the laws of a foreign power without consultation, against its will, with no representation in any Parliament, with no say, and unable to trade freely with the rest of the country?”
“That isn’t a sustainable position for any country, and we should be saying that very clearly, and I believe we have, and we need to act now.”
“I’m afraid the Europeans will continue to laugh at us if we keep walking around like this,” he added.
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has reiterated the Government’s threat to suspend parts of the protocol by invoking Article 16 of the treaty.
