How to live longer: The foods you should ‘limit’ to lower your cancer risk – it’s a cause.

A RANGE OF FACTORS, such as healthy eating and other lifestyle changes, can improve one’s chances of living a long and healthy life.

Although some factors, such as age and genetics, are beyond our control, there are some you can control.

According to Cancer Research UK, a healthier diet could prevent one out of every 20 cancers.

Though this is not always the case, you may be able to lower your cancer risk.

Furthermore, catching symptoms early can often aid treatment.

According to Macmillan, no single food causes or prevents cancer, but eating a well-balanced diet is beneficial to your overall health.

According to the World Cancer Research Fund, you should eat moderate amounts of red meat like beef, pork, and lamb, and “eat little, if any” processed meat.

It recommends eating no more than three portions of red meat per week, and that “cutting down on red meat can help protect against bowel cancer if you do eat red meat.”

“We recommend eating very little, if any, processed meat because strong evidence shows that it can be high in fat and salt, and that eating it can cause bowel cancer,” the organization says.

“It’s best to choose unprocessed meat if you eat meat,” it advises.

Researchers are still looking into how red meat causes cancer, but one possible mechanism involves a compound called haem, which contains iron and is responsible for red meat’s color.

“Haem can cause the formation of cancer-causing compounds that have been shown to damage the bowel lining, possibly leading to bowel cancer,” it says.

It also contains added nitrites and nitrates, which “can also be digested to form compounds that are thought to cause cancer,” according to the study.

It also mentions that these meats can be high in calories and fat, which can lead to weight gain.

According to Cancer Research, eating a high-fiber diet, which includes wholegrains like wholemeal bread or brown rice, “reduces your risk of bowel cancer.”

According to the charity, nine out of ten people in the UK do not consume the recommended 30 grams of fiber per day.
