A hairstylist is putting her time in quarantine to good use by practicing her skills on her very willing boyfriend, creating different ‘dos for him every day that they are self isolating,
Heidi Lee Oley, 31, from Atlanta, Georgia, was forced to shut down her salon amid the coronavirus pandemic, and she and her boyfriend, software engineer Geoff Clark, decided to quarantine themselves in her family cabin outside of the city.
Knowing that she would likely be out of work for weeks, and maybe even months, Heidi started testing out her abilities on her boyfriend’s long brunette locks – first using the one curling iron she brought with her to give him a George Washington-inspired style while he was working away at his computer.
‘George Washington typing out a new constitution,’ she wrote in the caption of the post, which showed Geoff sitting at his computer while modeling a funny curly style.
‘We’re in a cabin made from all the cherry trees he’s chopped down.
After posting photos of the resulting look on social media, the couple quickly went viral, with Heidi’s followers requesting she continue experimenting with his hair in order to create more funky styles.
‘I knew I’d be out of work for weeks, possibly months, so when he was on the computer I started curling it and was like, “I’m going to make you look like George Washington,”‘ Heidi told Bored Panda.
‘I posted it to a few hair forums on Facebook and they loved it.
‘I kept up with it because the responses were so uplifting. Our industry, among others, is in limbo, we don’t have clients, we don’t get paid, many are self-employed. The love we received is why we kept the series going.
‘I wanted to be a little glimmer of light during the shadows of the uncertainty of our industry.’
Since sharing the first images of Geoff’s new look on social media, Heidi has continued to get more and more creative with his hair – which she admits was the first thing about him that she noticed when they met two years ago.
Thus far, she has created looks inspired by Star Wars’ Princess Leia, The Grinch’s Cindy Lou Who, late singer Amy Winehouse – and even a do that might be modeled by a high schooler going to their ‘first prom’.
Followers have started sending Heidi ideas and requests for future looks, and the hairstylist says she has enough to keep her going for months – ensuring she will stay occupied for as long as the couple remains in quarantine together.
The hairstylist has become so invested in the challenge that she even bought new tools from a local grocery store to help her create new looks, having left her professional kit at home in Atlanta when traveling to the cabin.
She said: ‘His hair is the best! It’s very curly. When we came to the cabin, I only [had] my curling iron, I left all my tools at my salon, so I’m using tools from the grocery store.’
As for Geoff, Heidi revealed he has been an incredibly willing participant in the viral project, with the hair guru explaining that her boyfriend actually has the perfect head of hair for styling – something she isn’t used to doing daily, because her specialty is coloring.
‘It’s fun for me, he likes his hair played with, win-win,’ she said. ‘He has a heart of gold for letting me do this and post it.’
Geoff has become so invested in the project that he now gamely poses for hilarious photo shoots to better show off his look of the day, recently even wrapping himself up in a sheet to create a Princess Leia-style dress.
‘My girlfriend hasn’t watched Star Wars,’ he wrote in the caption while sharing the images on Instagram.
‘Hopefully I have inspired her with my acting skillz.’
Both Heidi and Geoff’s followers have gone gaga over the couple’s quarantine project, with many thanking them for providing some entertainment during this time of stress and upset.
‘You guys. Thanks for the stylist entertainment,’ one person commented, while another wrote: ‘You guys win quarantine.’
