Giorgi rallies to reach Palermo semifinals

Italy’s Camila Giorgi saved two matches Friday and rallied for a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over seventh-seeded Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine to reach the semifinals at the Palermo (Italy) Ladies Open.

Yastremska served for the match at 6-4, 5-4 when she squandered two chances to advance. Giorgi soon forced a tiebreaker, where she jumped on top 4-0 and finally put away the set on her third set point.

The final set was level until 3-3 before Giorgi won the last three games, two of them service breaks.

Giorgi’s semifinal opponent will be France’s Fiona Ferro, who beat Italy’s Sara Errani 6-4, 6-1. Giorgi is seeking the third WTA title of her career, having prevailed on grass in Rosmalen, Netherlands, in 2015 and on a hardcourt in Linz, Austria, in 2018.

The other semifinal will feature top-seeded Petra Martic of Croatia and fourth-seeded Anett Kontaveit of Estonia.

Martic edged Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3), and Kontaveit eliminated Italian teen Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

Martic squandered three match points while serving at 5-4 in the second set, and the players combined to lose serve in the set’s final three games before the tiebreaker.
