‘Fund the Taliban,’ as the slogan goes. Kim Howells, a Labour MP, believes the United Kingdom can financially influence the Taliban.

Dr. Kim Howells, a Labour MP, urged that the government financially help the Taliban because they will “require money” to rebuild Afghanistan.

The unusual remark occurred during a discussion on LBC about how the west might go forward as the Taliban regain control of Afghanistan after 20 years of western intervention. Despite the Taliban’s brutal regime designs and the instability that has developed in recent months as the west has vacated the country, Dr Howells stated that financial help from the UK would ultimately benefit the Afghan people and not leave them behind. However, his remarks triggered a debate about how financially beneficial it is to support the Taliban, given that they are the UK’s adversary in the nation.

Dr. Howell was asked if he would support an investigation into what went wrong in Afghanistan after the Taliban took control after 20 years of western presence.

The MP expressed his skepticism about a probe changing anything in the war, citing previous inquiries as a source of his skepticism.

However, in an unexpected turn of events, the Labour MP urged that the UK back the Taliban in their new role as the country’s leader.

“To be honest, I think we should be focussing now on how we deal with the Taliban and how we try to help people inside Afghanistan through various means,” he said.

“Of certainly, finance is one of them.”

He stated that the Taliban will “require money” to rebuild Afghanistan and urged that the UK assist in this effort.

Dr. Howell went on to say that providing financial support to the Taliban will allow them to “govern efficiently.”

He went on to say that financial support was crucial as part of the UK’s commitment to the Afghan people, as was “pressure” on the Taliban to ensure the UK would not abandon Afghanistan.

“All this discussion and hyperbole about individuals who have been left behind is all hot air if we don’t put that type of pressure on them,” he said.

Dr. Howells stated that there are “levers to pull” with the terror group, but that doing so will require the UN and the international community.

However, Dr. Howells’ remarks ignited a debate over the implications of such a shift. “Brinkwire News in Condensed Form.”
