Football thug jailed after punching police horse in ‘ugly scenes’ ahead of Portsmouth v Southampton clash

A FOOTBALL thug has been jailed after punching a police horse during “ugly scenes”.

Derek Jennings, 53, was among a “baying mob” of Portsmouth supporters awaiting the arrival of Southampton away fans.

Jennings was told by a cop to move back but hit the horse called Luna in the nose and mouth.

Luna shied away but he swung at the horse twice more before being pursued and arrested.

Jennings, of Portsmouth, admitted violent disorder ahead of the cup match at Fratton Park on September 24 last year.

The former Ukip candidate was jailed for 20 months at the city’s crown court.

Judge William Ashworth said: “You involved yourself in wide-scale violent disorder before a football game.

“There is only one appropriate punishment and that is immediate custody.”

He also imposed a six-year football ban.

Simon Jones, prosecuting, said the match was “one of the most intense rivalries in English football.”

Mr Jones added: “These are ugly scenes.”
