Following their split from the Royal Family, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry may have lost their authenticity due to high-profile collaborations with huge corporations, according to a royal expert.
In an article for the New Zealand Herald, Daniela Elser slammed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s revelation that they had become “impact partners” with the New York investment firm Ethic. Ethic is a Wall Street investment firm focused on social concerns like climate change, gender equality, and racial justice.
Ms Elser criticized the relationship as “headline-grabbing,” citing Ethic’s statement that the Sussexes were “fully dedicated to helping address the defining concerns of our time.”
“Another headline-grabbing business union,” she asserted.
“Another press statement extolling the world-changing potential of the Sussexes’ great ideas combined with some big business.”
“Another promise that collaborating with a multibillion-dollar giant will somehow improve the planet.”
“This schtick is becoming a bit tiresome,” she said, adding that “this latest agreement stretches plausibility to an emaciated thinness.”
“It makes perfect sense for Harry and Meghan to embrace socially responsible investing as their latest cause celebre, and it is a really important topic to lend their weight to,” she concluded.
“But if they were merely motivated by a burning desire to bring this burgeoning area to the world’s attention, why not choose a firm or platform created by a woman or a person of color?” she said.
Instead, they chose to partner with a business led by three white guys who formerly worked at Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan, and Goldman Sachs.”
Following Harry and Meghan’s decision to step down as senior working members of the Royal Family last year, a slew of high-profile partnerships involving the Sussex family made headlines.
“It’s been 13 months since news of Harry and Meghan’s collaboration with Netflix, their first major agreement, was unveiled in September last year,” Ms Elser alleged.
“It would turn out to be the first of many’megawatt’ deals for Brand Sussex.”
Since then, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been associated to companies like Spotify and Penguin Random House, among others.
