Five killed in wildfire in northern California

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) — At least five people have been found killed in vehicles engulfed by wildfires raging in Butte County, the U.S. state of California, authorities said Friday.

The Butte County Sheriff’s Office said the five fatalities were reported in the area of Edgewood Lane in Paradise, a town in Butte County, about 130 km north of California State’s capital Sacramento.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were located in vehicles that were overcome by the Camp Fire,” the sheriff’s office said in a release, adding that they could not be identified immediately because of the burn injuries.

“Autopsies will be conducted to determine the circumstances of the deaths and to begin the identification process,” said the sheriff’s office.

About 27,000 residents in the area have been ordered to evacuate as the wind-driven fires, which are still active and spreading quickly only one day after it erupted.
