A father has been charged with murdering his son and his son’s girlfriend when they visited a rural property southeast of Adelaide.
A man and woman, both 19, were found dead of apparent gunshot wounds after South Australia Police were called to the property northeast of Millicent at 11.30pm on Saturday.
The 47-year-old man was arrested without incident and has been charged with two counts of murder.
He was refused bail and will appear in Mount Gambier Magistrates Court on Monday.
The man is the father of the 19-year-old man, SA police confirmed on Sunday.
‘At this point my understanding is that the accused is the father of one of the victims, being the 19 year old male,’ Inspector Campbell Hill told Adelaide Now.
‘We are treating this as an incident where unfortunately the father is alleged to have killed his son, and understand the female involved is the partner of the son.’
Police said a family event was occurring at the residence, and the couple – who are from Adelaide – were visiting the property for the weekend.
Detectives and forensic experts travelled to the area on Sunday morning and are expected to remain at the crime scene for the entire day.
Inspector Hill could not answer if a gun had been seized yet, but said the incident was a tragedy.
‘(We) recognises again that this is a tragic event and the impacts of this will not only be felt for the particular families involved … but also the south eastern community.’
No other offenders are wanted in connection to the incident.
Inspector Hill said any information about the relationship between the alleged victims and the father would assist them their investigation.
