A 42-year-old man and his two-year-old daughter have died in a crash involving three cars and a bus south of Hobart.
The pair were in a sedan that collided with the bus about 8.30am on Thursday at Kingston.
Tasmania Police Inspector Jason Elmer said people rushed to their aid.
“It was a traumatic scene and for people to come forward and help, we appreciate the assistance that was provided,” he told reporters.
The female driver of the private bus, which had no passengers, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. One other driver was also transported for assessment.
Initial investigations suggest the bus applied emergency braking which caused the front of the vehicle to cross into the lane of the car.
“It’s a really tragic reminder of the dangers on the road,” Insp Elmer said.
The road, which police said was busy at the time of the crash, was closed until Thursday evening.
