As Ariana Grande attempted to revive her musical career late on Thursday night, she received a lackluster response to her new track.
The lead single from her new album, Petal, Hate That I Made You Love Me, was released by the 32-year-old singer and actress to kick off her comeback.
However, the song was met with a thud on social media, where some fans criticized it as “boring” and called it one of her worst songs to date, while others thought it was so generic that they were concerned AI may have contributed to its production.
With her part as Glinda in the popular movies Wicked (2024) and its less successful sequel, Wicked: For Good, last year, Grande has spent the most of the last several years concentrating on acting, so her return to music was disappointing.
With the release of her album Eternal Sunshine in March 2024, Grande—who fell in love with her partner Ethan Slater when they costarred in the popular movies—made her final significant artistic statement two years earlier.
Fans of X expressed their disapproval of her new track without holding back.

Hate That I Made You Love Me was called “literally the worst song I’ve ever heard” by an especially critical fan.
Even somewhat more sympathetic supporters expressed disappointment, with one poster stating, “It’s time we tell Ariana the truth, she’s no longer the industry plant.” Her tunes are mediocre in any case, and we are no longer in 2018.
“Omg what possessed her to choose this as a lead.. it sounds ai generated 😭,” said one admirer, criticizing the song for allegedly lacking originality and empathy.
In recent years, Grande has been busy with two Wicked movies in which she played alongside Cynthia Erivo (seen together in New York City in November 2025). The Hate That I Made You Love Me was initially revealed by Grande on May 8 in an Instagram post where she described it as “one of my favorite songs i’ll ever write.”
It was “produced by my favorite collaborators and dearest human beings in the world, the brilliant @ilya_music, the one and only Max Martin (and me),” she continued.
“I just can’t wait for it to be yours,” Grande said in closing. On May 18, she returned to tease the release with a sample of the instrumental backing track.

A few days prior, Grande hinted that the music video for Hate That I Made You Love Me, starring Justin Long (seen in November 2025 in New York City), will be released on Monday.

The actor was a part of Grande’s recent practice of having big-name celebrities co-star in her music videos.
She got Penn Badgley to co-star in her video for The Boy Is Mine in 2024 to commemorate the release of Eternal Sunshine, while Evan Peters, a regular on American Horror Story, had an appearance in We Can’t Be Friends.
In 2019, she cast Mean Girls star Jonathan Bennett in Thank U, Next and Beef actor Charles Melton in Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored.
