EXPRESS COMMENT: A Christmas extravagance is a gift that keeps on giving.

The last several years have not been kind to our high streets; well-known retailers such as BHS, Debenhams, Topshop, Homebase, and others have all closed their doors before Covid hit. However, the pandemic and subsequent lockdown added to the suffering, as did the lack of Christmas shopping.

So the news that the public is willing to spend a lot of money on our high streets this holiday season is exactly what the country’s struggling shops wanted to hear. An estimated £85 billion will be spent to support jobs and local communities, bringing much-needed color and cheer to places around the country.

If the last two years have taught us anything, it’s that getting out, meeting people, browsing in physical stores, having lunch with the family, getting coffee with friends, and finding the perfect present is a far more satisfying experience than sitting alone at our desks staring at a computer screen.

While the economic infusion from a vaccinated and emancipated nation would be extremely beneficial to the retail business, the government will need to consider how to assist it in the future.

The issues that existed before have not vanished, particularly the disparity in taxation between retail and online businesses. The subject of business rates must be revisited. It would be a tragedy if the hustle and bustle of our city centers vanished forever.

The fact that Dr. Irfan Halim, 45, died of Coronavirus after having been twice vaccinated is a stark reminder that the virus’s danger has not vanished.

While the vaccine was a miracle that saved millions of lives, this tragic loss reminds us that not everyone is entirely protected and that more care is still required.

However, we should be glad that we do not live in a place like Austria, where mandatory vaccinations are mandated by the government.

Such a strategy is incompatible with medical ethics and the freedoms we cherish. Some will push for similar policies in the United States, but they should be rejected.

However, freedom comes with a cost: responsibility. We must be conscious of the risk to others as individuals and as a group, and act accordingly.

The Queen and the late Prince Philip would have celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary today.

“Brinkwire Summary News” is what it’s called.
