Expert warns that the UK is on the verge of experiencing the “largest wave of illnesses ever witnessed,” according to Covid.
A SAGE scientist has warned that the UK is on the verge of experiencing the “largest wave of Covid infection that we have ever seen.”
All lockdown restrictions were lifted today, and British citizens took to the streets to celebrate ‘Freedom Day’ after months of confinement. However, as the Delta version spreads swiftly across the country, an expert has predicted a bleak summer of Covid infections and deaths.
Professor Andrew Hayward, a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), of University College London, predicted that Covid deaths might number in the thousands this summer.
“We are about to enter the largest wave of Covid infection that we have ever seen,” he stated.
“Even if we are conservative, even though the vaccine would significantly lower the number of deaths and hospitalizations, it is still likely that we will see somewhere in the low tens of thousands of deaths.
“And if we just resumed normal operations, we may be looking at tens of thousands of deaths.”
Prof Hayward told Sky News that keeping careful will be a “important issue” when it came to removing legislative limits.
However, the SAGE expert added that moving forward with no limitations and no transmission controls will result in a “exceptional” amount of cases.
“If we have uncontrolled transmission, we will have an unusually high number of cases,” he told the station.
“Right now, around one in every 100 of us is infected; at the height of the pandemic, it was closer to one in every 50.
“We hope to be higher than that and to stay there for a long time.
“So, even if just a tiny percentage of infected persons die, a small percentage of a large number is still a large number, with an even higher number of hospitalizations.”
Prof Neil Ferguson repeated Prof Hayward’s warning, predicting that Covid cases in the UK might reach 200,000 per day this year, causing “serious disruption” to the NHS.
On BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show on Sunday, the former SAGE scientist who produced the modeling that led to the first lockdown in March 2020 said it was “absolutely probable” that lifting restrictions would result in 100,000 daily cases and 1,000 hospitalizations.
“Brinkwire Summary News,” he continued, “the real question is whether we get to quadruple that – or even.”
