“Marcus Rashford fired England in front”

Marcus Rashford fired the Three Lions in front, tapping home from close range after a superb delivery into the box by Luke Shaw.

However, it was Luis Enrique – taking charge of his first game as Spain boss – and the away side who laughed last.

Saul Niguez first brought them level two minutes later, before Rodrigo converted from Thiago Alcantara’s whipped free-kick to earn La Roja an opening Nations League victory.

So how did each individual player perform?

Jordan Pickford – 5

Beaten at his near post for both of Spain’s goals tonight. A disappointing display from England’s World Cup penalty shootout hero.

Joe Gomez – 6

Not the worst performance, but caught ball watching for Saul’s equaliser and was too slow to react and prevent Rodrigo’s winner.

John Stones – 7

Assured as ever on the ball. Didn’t have much else to do up against Iago Aspas. Booked.

Harry Maguire – 6

Made some good blocks at times, yet should have been tighter on Rodrigo when the latter set up Saul for the leveller.

Kieran Trippier – 7

Played well down the right but wasn’t helped by a below-par performance by Kane upfront.

Jordan Henderson – 5

Not an enjoyable night’s work for the Liverpool skipper who spent most of it chasing shadows. Booked.

Luke Shaw – 7

Produced an inch-perfect pass for Rashford’s opener. Booked, too, before being stretchered off in the 53rd minute.

Jesse Lingard – 5

Ran rings around for large parts of the evening.

Dele Alli – 5

Another fairly non-existent member of the Three Lions midfield.

Marcus Rashford – 7

Tapped home to open the scoring. But also spurned a great chance to equalise with just under 10 minutes remaining.

Harry Kane – 6

On the night he was presented with the 2018 World Cup Golden Boot, Kane rarely provided a threat.

Danny Rose – 6

Replaced the injured Shaw in the 53rd minute and put in a decent shift.

Eric Dier – 5

Came on in the 64th minute of the game. Didn’t have a major impact.

Danny Welbeck – 6

Subbed on deep into stoppage time. Thought he grabbed a dramatic equaliser late on, only to see the linesman rule it out for a foul on Spain keeper David De Gea.

David De Gea – 7

Made a number of impressive saves. Most notably denying Man United team-mate Marcus Rashford’s header.

Dani Carvajal – 6

Had a good game at right-back but was unfortunately involved in the collision which led to Shaw’s injury. Booked.

Nacho – 7

Recovered from a poor piece of defending which allowed Rashford to tap into an empty net early on to have a solid game.

Sergio Ramos – 6

As ever, the controversial Real Madrid centre-half brought the ball out well. Rarely troubled at the back.

Marcos Alonso – 7

The Chelsea left-back is always technically astute and proved that again tonight.

Saul Niguez – 8

Brought the away side level with a cool finish from inside the box.

Sergio Busquets – 7

Not many mop up in front of a back four as well as the Barcelona midfielder, who put in a solid display as usual.

Thiago Alcantra – 7

Whipped in a terrific free-kick for Rodrigo’s winner and generally played well in midfield.

Isco – 6

Not the worst display, yet was outshone by his fellow midfielders on the night.

Iago Aspas – 6

Struggled to make a significant impact leading the line for Luis Enrique’s side.

Rodrigo – 9

Star man at Wembley. Set up Saul’s equaliser brilliantly before winning the match with a cool finish from Thiago’s free-kick.

Marco Asensio – 6

Introduced to the game with around 20 minutes remaining and failed to have an influence as England chased an equaliser.

Sergi Roberto – 5

The Barcelona man came on with 10 minutes to go and had a decent run out.

Inigo Martinez – 5

Another Spaniard brought on way too late to have any real impact.
