EastEnders cast set for mass AXING? Kate Oates reveals shock plans

EASTENDERS is going to be seeing Kate Oates join the soap as the new executive producer.

EastEnders boss Kate Oates will be heading the hit BBC soap along with Holby City and Casualty, and it is safe to say they should expect big changes.

But while the EastEnders cast members may be worrying for their jobs, Kate has made it clear she wants to focus on developing the storylines for the characters rather than axing them.

Speaking to Metro, Kate said: “Well there are definitely characters I would have my eye on and who I can very much envision being at the centre of some exciting storylines and episodes.

“EastEnders has a very strong cast and of course, I’m a massive fan and have been making sure that I am completely brushed up on all of the history over the last few weeks.”

Kate also spoke about whether she was thinking about axing some stars as she takes over the position in a months time.

She continued: “It’s always been the case that cast members come and go from serial dramas but I’m not a big fan of axing sprees, because I think you have to have faith in the talent you inherit and need to work out the best way to use it.

“I’ve watched shows before when there’s been a mass-clear out, and sometimes you run the risk of changing the landscape so much, the show feels really odd and different for quite a while.”

Kate concluded: “It’s also not great for morale, which is important to me. I’d rather do my best with the existing casts that I’ll be working alongside, and hope that enables them to do their best with stories that feel true to their characters.”

The producer joined the team of Emmerdale back in 2010, and worked on a number of different storylines, including Aaron Dingle assisting the suicide of his boyfriend Jackson Walsh.

Kate went on to join Coronation Street in 2012, and takes credit for controversial storylines such as the rapes of Bethany and David Platt, and Aidan Connor’s suicide.

What will Kate have in store for the characters of EastEnders?

Judging from her past storyline choices, EastEnders is set to get even grittier…

EastEnders continues tomorrow at 7.30pm on BBC.
