Customers quickly made fun of the new industrial “vibes” that one Costco warehouse was applying to its parking lot.
Massive concrete barricades were installed to Costco’s parking lot in Washington, DC, as evidenced by a now-viral social media post that compared the buildings to a “military base.”
Shopping carts are positioned between each barricade as the walls are seen close to the location’s entrance. This strange addition has a straightforward explanation for some consumers.
The store’s success caused the parking lot, which had a two-way lane at first, to become “way too crowded” due to the volume of cars entering and leaving. Any vehicle pulling out of a parking space would therefore result in a backlog.
Since then, the area has been converted to one-way streets, and concrete barriers and painted arrows have been placed to effectively block half of the lane.
In order to get out, cars now go to the end of the parking lane and wind through a separate area of the lot. The modifications follow the same Costco location’s 60-day closure of its petrol station due to “construction.”
The arrangement resembled a military facility, a bunker, and everything in between, according to some customers who made jokes about it.
One Reddit user commented, “I’m planning for the next toilet paper shortage,” while another said they were getting ready for the next shipment of Pokemon cards.
A Reddit member posted a photo of the enormous concrete barricades that are the newest addition to their Costco parking lot.
In the US, there are over 640 Costco stores, some of which are expanding their parking lots.
In an effort to improve traffic flow, a Reddit user stated that they shop at this Costco location and “appreciate” the additional barriers. The customer claimed that this parking lot in particular isn’t “chaotic” or “crazy,” despite its unusual appearance.
They said, “They used to have cones up, but switching to concrete barriers is not a bad idea because some Maryland driver will inevitably run over the cones.” “This Costco parking lot is the smoothest I’ve ever seen.”
Another Reddit user said, “Well, that Costco was the most chaotic Costco parking lot experience I’ve ever dealt with when I lived in DC, which is saying a lot, so I can see why they might want to do stuff with it.”
The parking lot at this Costco branch is not the only one undergoing a drastic makeover.
Temporary concrete barriers have been erected close to a junction that leads to the membership warehouse in Bellevue, Wisconsin.
Only right-hand turns will be permitted for drivers going in either direction, and a permanent barrier is anticipated to be put in place in the autumn.
The parking lot is a major drawback for some Costco customers when they shop at the membership warehouse. Even though there are plans to make adjustments, others call it “disorganised.”
One Reddit member commented, “I never understood why Costco cannot figure out their parking lots. Any major department chain, like Walmart, Kroger, and Meijer, has a simple open lot and it’s nowhere near the sheer chaos that Costco is.”
Customers can use the chain’s gas stations, which usually provide gas at a lower price than neighbourhood pumps.
Despite having parking lots, Costco is still one of the most well-liked retail establishments, with more members than competing chains like Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale.
Access to the desirable food courts and petrol stations is included in the $65 annual Gold Star/Business membership cost and the $130 annual Executive membership fee.
In Mission Viejo, California, Costco is even setting up its own standalone petrol station.
Officially opening in June 2026, this new site will only be accessible to Costco members.
