Authorities closed the southbound Interstate 17 from Northern to Glendale avenues after a crash early Friday morning.
Arizona Department of Public Safety officials said three vehicles were involved in the crash, including one vehicle that rolled over, and authorities said there were reports of racing prior to the crash.
Authorities said the female driver of the vehicle that rolled over was ejected from her vehicle. The driver was transported to a local hospital where she is facing serious and possibly life-threatening injuries.
The frontage road remained open, but the Arizona Department of Transportation was asking that travelers avoid the area and use alternate routes where possible.
The northbound lanes of Interstate 17 were unaffected.
Authorities had no estimated time to re-open the freeway while detectives continue to investigate the scene.
