Conservatives are dubbed the Brexit Party by Anna Soubry, who accuses them of having a ‘Trumpian-style’ leadership.
AN EX-OFFICER In recent times, a Tory MP has said that the Conservative Party has lost its “moral compass.”
Anna Soubry has slammed the Conservative Party, claiming that it is now more concerned with popularity than with defending its essential ideals. Ms Soubry drew a parallel between the Conservatives and the Brexit Party, now known as Reform UK, in an interview with BBC Newsnight’s Emily Maitlis.
“The Conservative Party has undergone a significant transformation,” she remarked.
“It now marches to a completely different drummer than it did under Theresa May, David Cameron, or any other Prime Minister.
“It’s effectively the Brexit Party now, but with a populist, Trumpian style.”
“What has happened is that the Conservative Party has lost its moral compass,” she continued.
“And once you lose your moral compass, you default to ‘what is the popular thing to do?’ rather than ‘what are our values?’ ‘What is the proper course of action?’
Viewers of BBC Newsnight flocked to Twitter to start a discussion over the former MP’s inflammatory remarks.
“She will no sure be mocked by No 10, but she has a point,” one user wrote.
