Burley shuts down Labour MP in tense Paterson probe. Tony Blair was the sleaziest!
As she confronted Labour’s Wes Streeting with a new poll on his party’s own records, SKY News presenter Kay Burley shut down the MP’s claims of Tory sleaze.
As a debate over the Conservative Party’s conduct rages on following a major U-turn on Owen Paterson’s suspension, the presenter questioned the Labour MP.
After being forced to backtrack after MPs were triple-whipped into voting against an immediate 30-day suspension for the Tory MP over lobbying rules violations, the party has been accused of sleaze.
Kay Burley, on the other hand, questioned Wes Streeting’s accusations of sleaze, confronting him with a damning recent poll about Labour’s own track record.
“Certainly, the latest opinion polls suggest that this Government is the sleaziest in recent memory,” Ms Burley said.
“Tony Blair’s government was the previous sleaziest in memory.”
“And that was the last time you were in charge.”
“I think that’s a bit of a harsh charge, isn’t it?” Mr Streeting asked, surprised.
“That’s what the latest polls suggested,” retorted the Sky News anchor.
“Did you finish them over the weekend?”
That one must have slipped past me.
But here’s the thing: we all have a responsibility to maintain high standards.
“At the end of the day, the next election will be a choice between the types of leadership you want.”
“And I’d much rather have a director of public prosecutions in Number 10 who was busting MPs for expenses fraud.”
“I’d like to see someone with Keir’s integrity lead the country.”
