Two months after being detained for DUI, Britney Spears entered a guilty plea during her hearing at Ventura County Superior Court on Monday.
The 44-year-old did not show up in court, but through her attorney, Michael Goldstein, she filed a guilty plea. She recently left rehab after spending three weeks there after being arrested on March 4.
Spears accepted a plea deal in DUI cases known as a “wet reckless” and was sentenced to 12 months’ probation, a day in jail, which she has already served, and an order to enrol in a three-month alcohol and drug education program.
This enables the motorist to enter a guilty plea to the lesser charge of careless driving involving alcohol and/or drugs, which carries a substantially shorter punishment.
Defendants with no past DUI history, low blood alcohol content, no injuries or collisions, and “self-motivation to address underlying issues through rehabilitation or a drug and alcohol program” are eligible for the deal.
Additionally, Spears was fined $721 by Ventura County Superior Court Commissioner Matthew Nemerson, who also mandated that she see a psychiatrist twice a month and a psychologist once a week.
In Ventura County Superior Court on Monday morning, Britney Spears entered a guilty plea to a misdemeanour DUI charge connected to her arrest on March 4.
According to the Daily Mail at the time, the pop star was arrested by the California Highway Patrol in Ventura County at approximately 9:30 p.m. on March 4 following many 911 calls.
In addition, judge decided that police might examine the problematic singer’s car without a warrant if she was stopped again and advised her not to use narcotics or alcohol other than prescription meds.
Spears was pulled over by police in March after it was reported that she was speeding and driving her black BMW erratically on the 101 motorway.
Afterwards, she willingly checked herself into a drug recovery center, which she apparently left last Wednesday.
“Miss Spears is doing well,” her attorney said outside the courtroom following the brief hearing. In preparation for this hearing, she returned home.
Following the arraignment, Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko issued a warning in a press conference: “Driving recklessly and erratically is an extremely serious crime…with possible catastrophic consequences.” “If she is stopped again by police officers, she will have to submit to being searched for alcohol and drugs.” Her car may also be searched.
The pop sensation spent three weeks in rehab before leaving last week.
Michael Goldstein, Spears’s attorney, departs Monday from her DUI trial in Ventura, California.
“We do not want Miss Spears to re-offend,” Nasarenko continued, citing the three-month DUI program that requires Spears to complete 30 hours of schooling in addition to the court-mandated frequent visits to therapists. Rehabilitation is crucial because of this.
Spears was charged with one count of misdemeanour DUI by Ventura County prosecutors, according to records acquired by the Daily Mail on Thursday.
She was exempt from attending the court because the charge is a misdemeanour.
The pop diva was arrested by the California Highway Patrol in Ventura County at approximately 9.30 p.m. on March 4 following many 911 calls, according to the Daily Mail.
Records from the Ventura County Sheriff show that the singer was freed the next morning.
Following Spears’ arrest in March, her representatives stated: “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable.”
“Britney will follow the law and take the appropriate actions, and hopefully this will be the first step toward the long-overdue change that needs to happen in Britney’s life.” Hopefully, she will be able to get the support and assistance she requires during this trying time.
“”Her boys will be hanging out with her,” the message continued. “Her loved ones will devise a long-overdue plan to position her for success and wellbeing.”
Sources informed TMZ that the singer was “crying a lot” during her processing at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, suggesting that she immediately expressed regret.
In California, a person’s driver’s license is automatically suspended following a DUI.
In addition, there are mandatory DUI education programs, a substantial fine of more than $1,000, and the possibility of jail time.
Three to five years of probation, a six-month licence suspension, and roughly six months of DUI school are the usual penalties for a first offence.
Erik Nasarenko, the district attorney for Ventura County, talks after the hearing
Spears entered a guilty plea through her counsel despite not having to appear in court for the misdemeanour case.
Spears was seen driving her Mercedes SUV in Los Angeles on February 12, seemingly breaking the law by holding her cell phone to her face. The ‘No Touch’ law in California prohibits talking on the phone. In relation to the incident, she was not charged.
However, Spears has previously been caught on camera veering into the wrong lane on a highway during a night out, so this was not an unusual event.Sources at the time said she was “spiralling” when her ex-husband Kevin Federline’s memoir was published. From 2004 to 2007, the two were wed.
In 2007, she was cited for a misdemeanour hit-and-run after colliding with a parked car. According to reports at the time, this was dropped when Spears paid the owner an unknown amount.
In 2008, a judge rejected a citation she received for driving without a valid California licence.
Law authorities went to Spears’s house in 2023 in response to a knife-related video, but no charges were brought.
For almost twenty years, Spears has experienced highly visible personal struggles: After displaying concerning behaviour in the months preceding her famed psychiatric hospitalisation, the celebrity notably experienced a terrifying breakdown in 2007.
Fans were alarmed when the 25-year-old attacked a paparazzi’s car with a green umbrella and shaved her head before entering a recovery center.
Following a terrible performance at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, where her rendition of Gimme More drew harsh criticism from both fans and critics, the singer experienced yet another setback.
After refusing to give her infant baby to her ex-husband Federline, she was placed under lockdown at a facility in January 2008.
