Before the deadly collision, the CNN news chief had a ‘instinct’ about Princess Diana’s death.
Princess Diana’s deadly automobile crash was covered by a CNN news chief, who told This website that his “instinct” informed him she might have died before her death was officially verified.
Today marks the 24th anniversary of the Princess of Wales’ death in a car incident in Paris. When the news broke that Diana had been in a vehicle accident, David Bernknopf, CNN’s former vice president and director of news preparation, was in command of a team of reporters. The ex-news chief recalled how he thought the issue was serious 24 hours after the first reports of the disaster.
“There was an instinctual thing, and I just believed the lack of knowledge was telling us something,” he told this website.
“Because she is so well-known and important to so many people, if she was alright, if it was just a minor head injury, news would get out and it wouldn’t happen.”
Diana was rumoured to be in a relationship with Dodi Fayed, the son of former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed, after her divorce from Prince Charles was finalized in 1996.
On August 30, 1997, the couple dined at the Ritz Hotel in Paris before checking out and traveling to a private residence.
Henri Paul, the hotel’s deputy head of security, drove Diana, Dodi, and bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones out of the building.
Reporters and photographers followed the automobile until it smashed into a concrete post in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel.
Henri and Dodi died quickly, while Diana was transported to the hospital and later confirmed dead.
Trevor was the only one of the four who survived the crash and was brought to the hospital.
Mr Bernknopf stated how it became clear to him quickly that the crash was a significant issue and that CNN needed to make the subject a priority.
“It was my feeling on the editorial side that it was at the very least a fascinating story because it was Diana – because she was still one of the most watched figures in the United States even if she was no longer what she had been in terms of the Royal Family,” he added.
“So I started talking to the assignment desk senior person about ‘possibly increasing coverage.’
“He was.” According to the Brinkwire Summary News.
