BBC Newsnight broadcasted a traffic light system that was described as “dark amber, burned orange.”
A TRAVEL expert has slammed new guidance that demands fully vaccinated Britons returning from France to enter quarantine, despite the fact that they are exempt from quarantine when returning from all other amber list destinations.
The government, according to aviation analyst Alex Macheras, is “making up the rules as they go along.” “What the UK has effectively done tonight is introduce another category to the traffic light system, which was designed to have three – hence the name ‘traffic light system’,” he told BBC Newsnight.
“They’re bringing out this amber plus, dark amber, burnt orange… whatever you want to call it… a quarantine program tailored solely for France, with little understanding of why this happened, according to the airline head I’ve spoken with since the story came.
“Yes, there has been a minor increase in beta variant cases in France, with the bulk occurring on the island of Reunion…
“These are just further examples of how this government continues to make up rules as they go along,” airline executives said.
One of the issues that has enraged the travel industry, according to Mr Macheras, is the alleged “political influence at play.”
“The whole issue is cloaked in mystery,” he added.
“How do we know that there aren’t a lot of other countries who aren’t red-list candidates but are exact candidates for this new, in-between list, like France?
“It’s not always the measures that enrage the aviation and tourist industries.
“It’s the lack of consistency and transparency, as well as the political influence at work.
