BARCELONA could announce the signing of Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt in the next two days.
That is according to Spanish football journalist Sid Lowe, who says that his transfer will not be the last as the club kick start their summer business.
Barcelona are still reeling after suffering a humiliating exit to Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final.
Going into the second leg at Anfield with a 3-0 lead, Jurgen Klopp’s charges put on a masterclass to win the tie 4-3 on aggregate.
Lionel Messi insisted at the start of the season that winning the competition again was high on the agenda after seeing bitter rivals Real Madrid win it four times in five years.
But it was not to be and the vultures have been circling ever since with a number of first team stars’ heads on the chopping block.
The likes of Ivan Rakitic, Philippe Coutinho, and Samuel Umtiti have all been linked with moves away from the Nou Camp in the aftermath.
But who will replace them? Well the Catalans have already announced the signing of Ajax star Frenkie de Jong for £65m.
And according to Lowe, his team-mate De Ligt is set to join him in the coming days.
“I think in the next couple of days we will almost certainly get the announcement of Matthijs de Ligt”
Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann is another who should be joining after the Frenchman announced that he would be leaving this summer.
The forward nearly signed for Barca last summer before deciding to remain in Madrid.
When asked on ESPN FC about his expectations for Barcelona in the transfer window this summer, Lowe dropped the De Ligt bombshell.
“They have already announced the signing of Frenkie de Jong and I think in the next couple of days we will almost certainly get the announcement of Matthijs de Ligt as well to join him,” he said.
“Obviously most of us are making the assumption, but of course we still don’t know, that Griezmann is another one of those signings so you are already talking about three players coming in for somewhere in the region of £225m which is a lot of money and it is a big reaction to what happened in the Champions League.
“There will definitely need to be some changes and it will be very interesting to see how they react emotionally to this at the start of the season.”
Former Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robson thinks that De Ligt would be a great acquisition for Barcelona.
“De Ligt would be a great signing and at 19 years old he looks like a magnificent defender,” he added.
“He has got all the attributes; he is good in the air, he’s a leader, he can play out from the back, he’s quick, and he looks to be a good character as well.
“He is captain of Ajax and he came back from a terrible start to his international career when he got taken off at half-time when he was thrown in aged 17 against Bulgaria.”
