Priti Patel will pay extra £54 million to France to prevent migrants from entering the UK. After a record 430 persons crossed the Channel in one day, French police will intensify their beach patrols. As a result of yesterday’s arrivals, the total number of migrants who have arrived in the UK this year has reached 8,452, which is higher than the entire year of 2020.
In the previous six years, the UK has handed France £141 million to help them deal with the situation. The Interior Minister, Gerald Darmanin, and the Home Secretary signed a new agreement yesterday to boost the war on people-smuggling groups.
Hundreds of migrants are expected to rush into dinghies and attempt to traverse the busiest shipping channels due to the present favorable weather and calm seas.
The money will pay for more drone monitoring to target traffickers and fences in smuggling hotspots like Calais, in addition to heightened police on French shores.
Between Boulogne and Dunkirk, French officials will scour a larger region of their northern coast, and patrols will be expanded farther north-west around Dieppe.
Crime gangs have grown over France’s coast, forcing refugees to take longer, riskier crossings while demanding thousands of dollars each.
By failing to prevent more migrants from setting sail, the French authorities have been accused in the United Kingdom of making “their problem our responsibility.”
Between June 2015 and June 2020, the government paid France £114 million to stop illegal immigration.
The Home Secretary and M Darmanin then agreed in November on a £27.1 million plan to beef up patrols between Boulogne and Dunkirk.
The UK has already committed £141 million.
By Sunday night, 8,452 migrants had arrived in the UK this year, surpassing the figure of 8,417 for the entire year of 2020.
Around 200 immigrants are said to have arrived the day before yesterday.
A French warship transported a group of 13 immigrants crowded onto a small boat into British waters before handing them over to a perplexed news crew covering the incident.
