Arsenal plan first summer signing with £10.5m Walter Kannemann bid

ARSENAL are ready to make Gremio defender Walter Kannemann their first signing of the summer.

Unai Emery is keen for reinforcements as he plots to bounce back and finish in the top four of the Premier League.

Arsenal ultimately finished fifth but can still secure Champions League football by beating Chelsea in the Europa League final at the end of the month.

Emery is determined to strengthen his squad but is aware that he may have to sell players first, with Arsenal’s transfer budget rumoured to be set at around £50m.

The Gunners have been routinely criticised for their leaky defence this season, with Shkodran Mustafi the main victim.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos impressed during his first year at the club and Emery wants to find him a long-term defensive partner.

And according to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Kannemann is his priority target.

The Argentine is looking to leave Gremio and has attracted interest from Serie A giants Inter Milan and Sampdoria.

But the report claims he may not be interested in a move to Italy and his next destination could be Arsenal after they submitted a €12m (£10.5m) bid.

“Arsenal have been routinely criticised for their leaky defence this season.”

The Brazilian outfit are still considering the offer and are expected to respond later this week.

Arsenal have been linked with Samuel Umtiti as Barcelona look to fund a move for Ajax sensation Matthijs de Ligt.

But Kannemann would represent a cheaper alternative as they also look to bolster their attacking options.

Nicolas Pepe is a long-term target and Arsenal have reportedly sent scouts to watch Lyon striker Moussa Dembele.

Emery is in the market for a box-to-box midfielder as a replacement for Aaron Ramsey.

PSG duo Christopher Nkunku and Adrien Rabiot have been touted in the past although it’s unlikely Arsenal will consider them this summer.

The north London side are expected to have a higher transfer budget if they beat Chelsea in Baku and avoid another season of Europa League football.

The clash takes place on May 29.
