Arsenal news: Gunners hero makes ominous bottom three prediction despite transfer splurge

ARSENAL boss Unai Emery has bought well in the summer – but they’ll struggle in the opening weeks of the season.

That’s according to Paul Merson who’s hailed the Spaniard but has told the Gunners faithful to keep their expectations low.

Emery signed five players during this transfer window as he reshuffled his squad.

Stephan Lichtsteiner, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi and Bernd Leno were all drafted in.

Merson has praised Emery’s transfer business but doubts whether veteran defender Lichtsteiner will be a regular starter.

“Arsenal boss Unai Emery signed five players this summer”

“He’s bought players that they needed,” Merson said on Sky Sports.

“He needed defenders, he’s bought experience in Lichtsteiner.

“But, 35 years of age. How many 35-year-olds are playing in the Premier League? Especially at the back.

“But he’s bought experience, it’s going to be different. He needs time.”

Arsenal host last seasons runaway title winners Manchester City tomorrow.

They then have a trip across London to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Merson says his former club could be in the relegation zone after the opening fixtures.

“He couldn’t have wished for a worse start, Man City at home, Chelsea away,” he added.

“They could be in the bottom three after two games, which would be a shame for the manager.

“Tomorrow you will see a team that will make it very difficult for Man City to break them down.

“It won’t be like the old days where we have a shot, you have a shot.”

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s curtain raiser with City, Emery claimed he had total confidence is his players.

“We are working very hard in time for Sunday to show our capacity and our mentality and I want to win this match because it is important for us and the players to take confidence,” he said.

“I have a lot of confidence in myself and I want to transmit that to my players.

“For me this is a new way and a new process, the past is important for this club and the people working here, but we are starting something new with the same players.

“We will keep a lot of the good ideas that they were already working on here, and also bring in more to improve on tactical things.

“We need to keep a positive energy which we need, and create a new way and new process.”
