Are You Being Served? legend Mollie Sugden never discussed Mrs Slocombe’s ‘pussy’ at home, reveal her kids

ARE YOU Being Served? icon Mollie Sugden never discussed Mrs. Slocombe’s “pussy” at home, her children have revealed.

The late star was famed for her cheeky references in the BBC sitcom, with the running pun entertaining millions of Brits over the years.

Mrs. Slocombe would regularly make bizarre comments that kept viewers’ wondering, including lines such as: “I had to thaw my pussy out before I came in. It had been out all night.”

And while many households up and down the country would discuss the innuendo as they chuckled at the show, it was never mentioned in the actress’ own home.

Mollie lived with her husband William Moore at the time, as well as their twins sons Simon and Robin, now 56.

Discussing the joke, the men admitted that the family had a mutual understanding that they’d all “pretend” there was no rude double meaning.

Robin said: “We had to pretend to not really understand and my mum had to pretend not to understand it.

“It was both parties going: ‘We will both pretend it’s just about a cat.'”

Mollie played the purple-haired character between 1972–85 – reprising the role in Grace & Favour seven years after the former went off air.

The beloved star passed away in July 2009 at the age of 86.
