Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York, has resigned as a result of sexual harassment claims.
ANDREW CUOMO, the governor of New York, has resigned in the wake of sexual harassment claims.
Mr Cuomo continued to reject several of the allegations of unwelcome physical contact with women during a press conference today. He then stated that he would be stepping down to allow the administration to “return to governing.”
“Wasting energy on distractions is the last thing a state government should be doing, and I can’t be the reason for that,” he said.
“The greatest way I can contribute right now is to take a step back and allow the government get back to work.
“It’s not about’me,’ but about ‘us.'”
According to the governor’s comments, his resignation will take effect in 14 days.
Mr Cuomo faced calls to quit earlier this month after an inquiry showed he had sexually assaulted 11 women and fostered a “climate of fear” in a “toxic” workplace.
The state attorney general, Letitia James, presented a 165-page report that delivered a mound of vivid evidence that threatened to bring him down.
Mr. Cuomo, a prominent Democratic Party official, is accused of reaching under an administrative assistant’s blouse and grabbing her breast.
He was also accused of sliding his finger down the spine of a female state policeman who was assigned to guard him.
Mr Cuomo earlier stated that he “never improperly touched anyone or made unwanted sexual advances.”
Mr Cuomo forcefully criticized Ms James’ report before resigning, warning New Yorkers about the consequences of “bias or a lack of impartiality in the justice system.”
He claimed he thought his behavior was acceptable, but that the 11 women who accused him were likely “really hurt,” and he apologized “deeply.”
Mr Cuomo has lost Democratic Party support, and US President Joe Biden has called on him to quit.
“I believe he should resign,” Biden had stated.
“I understand the state legislature is considering impeachment.
“I have no way of knowing for sure.”
The sexual harassment charges, according to White House press secretary Jen Psaki, are “abhorrent.”
Mr Cuomo has “lost the trust of the assembly democratic majority and he can no longer remain in office,” according to New York Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie.
Mr Cuomo’s departure comes after he was generally praised for his leadership during the coronavirus pandemic’s peak.
“These interviews and pieces of information revealed a highly disturbing.”Brinkwire Summary News,” Ms James said at a news conference last week.
