A former chemist and convicted sex offender was discovered dead after Balinese hotel employees broke into his room after he neglected to check out.
On Wednesday afternoon, Kenneth Leslie Sternes, 77, was discovered unconscious in his room at the Cove Griya Elite 1 hotel in East Denpasar.
In 2010, the former chemist from Brisbane was convicted of grooming a girl he thought was 14 years old, and he was imprisoned in Queensland.
When Sternes did not leave the room by the midday checkout time and did not answer several knocks on the door, hotel workers set off the alarm.
Before employees made another attempt an hour later, a housekeeper knocked on the door at around 1:00 pm. A locksmith was scheduled to open the door by 3 p.m.
Sternes was found on the floor by personnel when the door was unlocked, and they called Bali International Hospital Sanur’s medical professionals.
Sternes was pronounced dead after being evaluated on the spot by medical personnel. According to police, the chemist passed away roughly six hours prior to his discovery.
According to East Denpasar Police Chief Ketut Tomiyasa, officers went to the hotel at around 5:30 p.m. after learning of the fatality.
Kenneth Leslie Sternes, a chemist and convicted sex offender, was discovered dead in his Bali hotel room on Wednesday after he failed to check out on time. “We have also collected witness statements at the scene,” he said.
Sternes was suspected of dying from a disease, according to police, who stated there were no indications of violence.
Officers discovered two insulin injections and Tamsulosin hydrochloride, a drug frequently used to treat an enlarged prostate, in the room.
His right wrist had injection marks, his groin area had a catheter, and his back had livor mortis, according to an identification examination.
Two white iPhones, a wallet containing a small amount of cash, travel documents, an Australian Organ Donor Register card, and a Dell laptop bag were also discovered by the officers.
His body was sent to Denpasar’s Sanglah Hospital.
The Australian Consulate has been notified by hotel management, and it is anticipated that they would assist in informing Sternes’ family of his passing.
The 61-year-old was convicted in 2010 of exposing a youngster to pornographic material and grooming a child under the age of sixteen.
Sternes neglected to check out, so staff at the Cove Griya Elite 1 hotel in East Denpasar had to call a locksmith to break into his room.
The court heard that the registered chemist had used the internet to speak with an undercover police officer who was pretending to be a 14-year-old girl.
Sternes was discovered to have used the username “cassie daluvbug” to send obscene material to “Cassie Henry” during online chats with police.
Later, he made an effort to meet the girl at his south-east Brisbane residence.
Sternes informed the girl he was 29 years old, which is half his actual age, according to the court.
He was sentenced to 13 months in prison and 27 months in prison.
According to Balinese police, Sternes’ death is still being investigated.
Mr. Tomiyasa stated, “We are still awaiting the family’s consent to perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.”
