Due to her improper handling of four child sex crime cases and her behaviour in the courtroom, a Texas judge received a public warning.
Melissa Morris was publicly sanctioned by the Texas State Commission on Judicial Conduct (SCJC) for allegedly curtailing probation for four paedophiles who entered guilty pleas in a 2024 sex crime case.
According to the warning, Morris “failed to be patient, dignified, and courteous” toward a prosecutor who asked for hearings so she could reevaluate her decisions for the offenders.
District Attorney Ryan Kent was accused by the judge via email of exhibiting a “lack of professionalism and respect.”
Morris responded, “Please renew your commitment to professionalism,” in response to the warning.
“Because I am positive that Mr. Teare does not commend prosecutors who act in a way that is contrary to the mandate of integrity and respect.”
Morris also “breached grand jury secrecy,” according to the committee, after she gave defence attorneys private information regarding the subpoena.
Kim Ogg, a former district attorney for Harris County, told a local source Morris’s conduct violated her “duty as a judge,” according to the Texan.
Judge Melissa Morris of Harris County received a public warning for her improper handling of four child sex offence cases and her behaviour in the courtroom.
“Protecting innocent crime victims from sexual predators is one of the most important responsibilities we hold as officers of the court,” Ogg told the outlet. Melissa Morris was publicly sanctioned by the state’s commission for allegedly curtailing probation for four paedophiles who entered guilty pleas in a 2024 sex crime case.
“A judge’s job is to uphold the entire law, not just the parts they agree with,” she continued.
The paedophiles, who were eventually deported, benefited from the early probation termination because it ended before they had to register as sex offenders, the former DA continued.
She stated that they would not have an active arrest warrant for their horrible acts if they attempted to return to the United States.
Ogg also discussed the email breach, telling the outlet that it is illegal to purposefully leak grand jury information. “By tipping off the defence attorneys, she gave the criminal defendant a huge advantage which also endangered the public,” Ogg said, adding that Morris “earned this shameful public reprimand.”
Morris acknowledged to The Commission that she had disclosed the confidential information, claiming that it was an error committed by a “novice jurist.”
Despite the severe punishment, the judge’s seat on the bench remains intact.

According to the warning, the judge added that she issued the discharge orders in error because she thought it would save the county time, money, and resources.
The judge remains on the bench despite the severe punishment.
She will continue to preside over the 263rd District Court until she is reelected, and she has the option to contest the warning.
Morris was contacted by Daily Mail for comment.
