Following the filing of rape charges against her long-time surgeon partner, Annastacia Palaszczuk has abruptly cancelled many public events due to “unforeseen circumstances.”
On the afternoon of 30 April, officers raided Dr Reza Adib’s opulent Gold Coast flat as the former premier of Queensland was at an author presentation promoting her new memoir, The Politics of Being Me.
Adib, 65, was accused by police of assaulting a lady in her 30s at his Burleigh Heads home on March 30. The following day, he was charged with three charges of rape, one crime of sexual assault, and two counts of deprivation of liberty.
There is no indication of any misconduct, and Palaszczuk is neither connected to nor involved in the charges.
Her spokesperson Max Markson stated on Sunday that subsequent talks on her book tour would go as scheduled, despite the cancellation of multiple weekend appearances.
However, Fraser Coast Libraries’ free author lecture that was supposed to take place in Maryborough on Thursday has been “postponed.”
The website says to “keep an eye on the website for future updates.”
On Tuesday, a second event scheduled for next week at the Australian National University in Canberra was also cancelled.
Author appearances to promote her new memoir have been postponed “until an appropriate time in the future” by Annastacia Palaszczuk (seen with her partner).
Three allegations of rape, one case of sexual assault, and two counts of deprivation of liberty were brought against Dr. Reza Adib (seen at the Southport Police Station last Friday).
While promoting her new book on the Gold Coast, the former premier of Queensland (left) learned that police had raided her partner’s house.
An email from ANU Events said, “We regret to inform you that Meet the Author – Annastacia Palaszczuk has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.” We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming event.
“We will be postponing media interviews and some events that were locked in to talk about Annastacia Palaszczuk’s book The Politics of Being Me until an appropriate time in the future,” Mr. Markson told the Daily Mail on Wednesday, confirming the change in plans.
After what police characterised as thorough investigations, detectives stormed Adib’s flat on Thursday and seized a number of things under a crime scene request.
Adib and his attorney later visited the Southport police station on Friday.
In a statement last week, the legal firm Robertson O’Gorman indicated that their client was taken extremely seriously and was astonished by the accusations.
“He is presumed innocent like everyone accused of a crime, and he intends to vigorously defend the charges,” attorney Dan Rogers stated.
In order to promote her new memoir, The Politics of Being Me, Annastacia Palaszczuk (pictured on the day police raided her partner’s home) has postponed author talks and media appearances. “At the moment, Dr. Adib is primarily concerned about the welfare of his family and his patients and he will do whatever it takes to ensure that they are looked after in the coming weeks.”
Adib is a laparoscopic specialist who has reportedly carried out over 20,000 treatments.
In 2021, he and Palaszczuk made their romance public.
As word of the probe spread, the former premier spoke at a Gold Coast event on Thursday, telling a member of the audience that she was unable to comment since she had no knowledge of the situation.
She posed for pictures with supporters and signed her memoir, but when the media approached her as she was leaving the event, she declined to respond.
Adib is scheduled to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on May 14 after being granted bail.
