A man hiker was discovered dead in Glacier National Park, and park officials are looking into a potential bear assault.

According to a press release from Glacier National Park, search and rescue personnel discovered the body at 12 p.m. on Wednesday.

Officials said law enforcement and wildlife are monitoring the region for grizzly activity and believe the man’s injuries are related to a bear assault.

“His injuries are consistent with those sustained by a bear encounter,” the park said, adding that the investigation is still ongoing. “The victim was located about 2.5 miles up the Mt Brown Trail, approximately 50 feet off the trail in a densely wooded area with downed timber.”

The National Park Service is waiting 72 hours after notifying the next of kin before disclosing the identity of the male hiker.

The trail where the potential attack occurred has been restricted by park employees until they decide how to proceed with “wildlife behaviour monitoring.”

Park officials stated, “Visitors are reminded to stay off closed trails.”

In 2023, there were about 300 grizzly bears in Glacier National Park (stock).

The park claims that the most recent bear mauling in the region occurred in Two Medicine Valley in 1998.

The park’s bear-related injuries were last documented in August of 2025.

On August 28, 2025, a brown grizzly charged and attacked a 34-year-old female hiker in the national park.

While hiking close to Lake Janet with a companion hiker, “a medium brown-colored bear with two cubs charged out of the brush” directly at her.

The female hiker covered her head and dove off the trail in an attempt to get away from the dangerous animal.

She suffered injuries to her arm and shoulder when the grizzly swung its enormous claws at her.

Her hiking companion deployed bear spray as the attack progressed, which made the bear flee.

The entire incident, according to the park, lasted less than thirty seconds. The two proceeded in the direction of a campground, where they encountered other hikers who sent an SOS to park dispatch using an InReach gadget.

Glacier National Park is home to over 1,000 bears, including brown and black bears, according to the park.

They noted that in 2023, there were about 300 grizzly bears residing in the park.
